City buildings getting new roofs

Council will spend more than it budgeted to replace the roof at three city facilities.

The city is expected to replace the main roof at the downtown Fire Hall, the lower roof of the Dogwood Operations Centre and the roof of the Dogwood Operations Centre equipment shed.

Council awarded the project to Nelson Roofing and Sheet Metal Ltd., based out of the Comox Valley, at a value of $330,628.

That amount is more than council budgeted for this past spring.

“The cost…for the roof replacement project is in excess of the approved budget value of $300,000, funded through the Future Capital Reserve,” said Clinton Crook, the city’s assistant purchasing agent. “Staff is recommending that the (extra) be funded through facilities department operating funds by deferring other work planned for 2011 to future years.

Crook said the roof on the Fire Hall, which was installed in the 1990s, leaks in several areas and its condition will decline in the next one-to-two years. The lower roof on the Dogwood Operations Centre was installed in 1992 and experiences significant leakage during storm events, Crook said. The roof on the storage shed was built in 1980 and experiences minor leakage when it rains.
