City releases water quality report

Nanaimo residents' water use declined year-over-year in 2015.

Nanaimo residents’ water use continues to dip.

The City of Nanaimo released its annual water quality report, which shows where water comes from, how the city ensures it’s safe and the amount of water city residents tap into.

The report shows that residential water use was 208 litres per person per day in 2015, down from 242 litres the year before and 250 litres in 2013.

Overall average daily water use went down to 36.55 million litres a day compared to 38.5 in 2014.

A drier than average summer and water restrictions between June and September contributed to the reduction in annual water consumption in the city, the report states.

There were 40 concerns from residents about the quality of drinking water last year, with most related to water colour and taste. The city report says the majority of concerns were resolved following additional flushing of the distribution main lines.
