School began today (Monday) in Abbotsford and cities across the province after a weeks-long teachers’ strike.
Monday is a shortened first day with regular hours of instruction beginning on Tuesday.
An announcement from superintendent Kevin Godden advised parents to check school websites and posted notices for school-specific schedules. If parents have additional questions, please consult the school administration.
Last week, B.C. teachers voted strongly in favour of ending their strike and returning to work.
B.C. Teachers’ Federation members voted 86 per cent in favour of a six-year agreement negotiated with the help of mediator Vince Ready.
A letter from Godden last week said “we want to return to the traditional routines of schooling with as little disruption as possible, however we might see some need for school re-organization as we get underway, especially at the secondary level.”
Administrators from Yale Secondary School sent a notice to students and parents with information on the first day activities and potential challenges of getting back to school.
“This year will be extra challenging because we have not had our staff available to assist with timetabling, and the many necessary jobs of school start-up. The Abbotsford School District is piloting a brand new scheduling system this year which will make the process more difficult, and more time consuming. Please, be patient as we do our best to get the year up and running.”
