Cumberland Mayor Fred Bates expressed his outrage Tuesday about a “disgusting display” by coal mine protesters whom he said verbally assaulted Vancouver Island North Conservative MP John Duncan at the Empire Days Victoria Day parade Monday.”This parade is not about politics,” said Bates, who chastised protesters for being rude and ignorant. “It doesn’t show a lot of common sense in a coal mining town.”Coun. Leslie Baird also criticized the group for intentionally trying to ruin a public event.• Council gave third reading to an animal control bylaw that provides various definitions of ‘aggressive dog’ and other such revisions. Dangerous or aggressive dogs found at large within Village limits can cost their owners $500. Those keeping more than four dogs are subject to $100 fines. • Council adopted an amendment bylaw to exempt the Discovery Centre tourism project property from the requirement to provide security for landscaping and its cost estimate.
