Communities reel in funding

The province has granted $768,018 to Penticton, Summerland and Peachland to help the communities with their spending priorities.

The province has granted $768,018 to Penticton, Summerland and Peachland to help the communities with their spending priorities.

With this installment of the Strategic Community Investment Fund, eligible communities across B.C. are also getting a return in net traffic fine revenues. The SCIF fund was established to stimulate local economies, create jobs and encourage overall growth.

“These grants are a major investment in community safety initiatives and infrastructure. These programs recognize the critical role that municipalities play in delivering important public services and ensure they have the means to do so,” said Penticton MLA Bill Barisoff.

In addition, being green has paid off in more ways than one as local governments will be reimbursed for the carbon taxes they paid in 2010 — this amounts to $3.8 million.

The small community and regional district grants are unconditional grants to local governments that assist them in providing basic services. Grant amounts are based on a formula that factors in a base amount, population and assessment values.
