Comox Valley schools will be closed to students March 5 through 7, superintendent Sherry Elwood announced late Thursday afternoon on the SD71 website.
As she noted, those are the three days BC Teachers’ Federation members will fully withdraw their services after a ruling this week by the Labour Relations board.
“During these three days schools will be closed to students as we are unable to provide appropriate supervision or instruction,” Elwood said. “CUPE staff may be reporting to work and principals and vice-principals will be on site as well.
“Strong Start programs will be open for regular participants. After-school programs and any community programs that normally occur on site on these days will be cancelled.
“In addition, extra-curricular events and any other scheduled after-school or evening activities will be cancelled,” Elwood added. “Parents who access daycare services on school sites will need to contact the daycare providers directly for information.”
Throughout the job action the district will post information on the school district website at www.sd71.bc.ca, Elwood said.
The Comox Valley District Parent Advisory Council (DPAC) is setting up a contact list of secondary students or stay-at-home parents who are interested in offering childcare. Those offering childcare, are asked to give their names, age (if under 20), postal codes and contact information (phone or e-mail) to DPAC.

DPAC stresses that SD71, the school PACs and DPAC will not hold any legal responsibility regarding these childcare arrangements. DPAC will not be checking character references.
