Computer scams

Hightech Computers owner Al Gage says he’s getting calls from people who are being contacted by “out-of-area” callers identifying themselves as Microsoft company employees.

They offer to help people with current issues regarding Windows operating system errors.

“They ask the unsuspecting computer users to download free software and install it, which allows the callers to take control of the victim’s computer.

“The computer owner sees their cursor moving around the computer. The company then tells the victim that they found some problems and ask for a credit card to charge them for repairs.”

Even if they don’t get the card number, Gage says they still have information from the computer as well as the victim’s name, address and other personal information.

He suggests anyone receiving an unsolicited call like this, hang up and report it to the local RCMP.
