Chicken bylaw read

Council gave first two readings to an amendment to the animal control bylaw for backyard chickens.

In addition, municipal staff will implement a process to encourage public input about the proposed bylaw.

Speaking about the bylaw earlier in the evening, Lauren Holler, who has backyard chickens at her property on Pierre Drive, said backyard chickens can provide a healthy food source for families.

Juanita Laye, who lives next door, said she and her husband circulated a petition in the area. Of those surveyed, 80 per cent were opposed to backyard chickens.

Jim Laye added that the chickens could attract coyotes and other pests.

“It will affect all the residents of Summerland for years to come,” he said of a backyard chicken policy.

Busking bylaw adopted

A bylaw amending the fees and charges to allow busking permits was given final reading.
