Highway 1 was shut down in both directions on Saturday after a chain-reaction collision in the Fraser Canyon.
Fraser Valley Traffic Services and Boston Bar RCMP were called to the scene, four kilometres north of Boston Bar near Alpine Cafe, at about 5 p.m. on Nov. 12.
Police said three northbound vehicles were stopped in the fast lane waiting for a driver to turn left when a 2007 Freightliner semi-trailer rear-ended a 2005 Buick, triggering a domino effect.
When the 41-year-old Winnipeg driver attempted to steer his rig to the left to avoid further collisions, his semi-trailer hit a southbound 2008 Nissan Altima.
The 48-year-old male driver from Ladysmith was transported to Chilliwack General Hospital before being transferred to Royal Columbian Hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.
The 67-year-old man driving the Buick and his 63-year-old female passenger were taken to Fraser Canyon Hospital in Hope with minor injuries.
Police said environmental, mechanical and road conditions don’t appear to be factors.
The accident is currently under investigation by Fraser Valley Traffic Services, and the Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstructionist Section.
