Creston jewellers turn gold into cash

Turning your unwanted gold jewelry into cash isn’t magic. It is something local jewelers do on a regular basis, said Ron Hurry.

Hurry, who operates his business out of Cresteramics on Canyon Street, said both he and Tony Mulder Jewellery purchase gold items from local residents on a regular basis.

“People might want to consider dealing with local businesses instead of shipping off gold to buyers that advertise on the Internet,” he said. “The best part is that you can sit down, find out what our offer is, think about it and then say yes or no. …

“I have even talked people out of selling some items, or having them repaired. In the end, it’s your choice — you can pick up your jewelry and walk away without a hassle.”

Sending away valuables to an unknown business, or dealing with people you don’t know, can be unsettling or even risky, Hurry said.

“But I have more than 40 years of experience in this business and my best advertising is word of mouth — keeping customers happy keeps me in business.”

The price paid out is based on the current market price of gold (more than $1,600 an ounce this week), with costs of shipping, processing (Hurry sends the pieces he buys off to Toronto to be melted down) and profit margin factored in.

“Come and see a local jeweler if you have pieces you would like to sell,” Hurry said. “If you aren’t happy with our offer, you don’t have to accept it. But you will probably be pleasantly surprised.”
