Creston RCMP deal with offender’s release, hit and runs, and more

It has been a week dominated by preparations for the release of frequent offender Jason Neil Beaudry, RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday.

“The approvals required to produce a public interest notification are quite extensive,” Gollan said.

Beaudry, 34, was released from a provincial correctional institution on Sept. 17 and will be living in Creston. He has a criminal history including violent and sexual offences and has been known to use weapons. Past victims include adult females and males.

In other police news, the RCMP responded to 63 calls from Sept. 17-23, Gollan said.

September 17

•Police attended to the sudden death of a male in Riondel.

•A mother-daughter argument on Eighth Avenue South required police attention.

•A hit and run in a Cook Street parking lot was reported. The suspect vehicle is a newer white Dodge pickup bearing B.C. licence plates.

•In an incident on Leadville Road in Yahk, a male was arrested after ramming a neighbour’s vehicle three times with his own vehicle. He was charged with assault with a weapon (his vehicle) and failure to remain at the scene.

•In an ongoing issue, a noise complaint was received from 11th Avenue South.

•Two well-being checks, one on 11th Avenue South and the other on Hillside Street, revealed the residents were okay.

•Police are using surveillance tapes to help investigate a complaint of assault on Canyon Street.

September 18

•A male motorcycle driver was hospitalized with injuries after he took a curve too fast and crashed his bike on Highway 3A.

•A complaint about quads being driven in the Simmons Road area was received.

•A female who drove away from Vancouver Street after hitting a parked car reported the incident to police after she learned her own car had been damaged.

•A landlord-tenant dispute was reported on 27th Avenue North.

•A highly intoxicated underage female was arrested and held in police cells until sober, then released to a provincial agency.

•Shots were reported in the Leaning Tree Road area of Lister.

•A recreational vehicle was destroyed when it caught fire after being struck by another vehicle on 33rd Avenue South at Highway 3.

September 19

•An intoxicated 27-year-old male was arrested on Highway 21 after his elderly parents called in a complaint. He was held in cells until sober.

•A day planner found on Highway 3 has been returned to its owner.

•Police were called to a family dispute on 16th Avenue South.

•A report of a possible helicopter crash in the Gray Creek Pass proved not to be true — the helicopter was being used to fight a small fire in the area.

September 20

•A purse was stolen from the shopping cart of a customer in a Cook Street store.

•Police were called to the scene on Blackmore Road after a youth was shot in the eye with a BB gun.

•A small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia were seized and destroyed at a Vancouver Street residence.

•A 911 call through a Riley Road cellphone tower could not be traced.

•A child reported missing from a Newman Street residence was located in school.

•A complaint about an attempted theft on Northwest Boulevard proved to be unfounded.

September 21

•A quantity of firewood was stolen from a Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road residence after thieves cut through fencing.

•Police were unable to locate a black Chevrolet Silverado with Alberta licence plates reported to be driving erratically on Highway 3.

•Police were called to a dispute between neighbours over garbage in a 25th Avenue South yard.

•An intoxicated male found lying on a path near Millennium Park refused treatment from ambulance personnel.

•Police are investigating a report on the erratic driving of a red Lexus on Highway 3A.

•When an officer checked out a report of a suspicious male walking on Highway 3 near Kootenay Pass, he learned the man had left work in the Elk Valley and, on a whim, decided to walk to Vancouver.

September 22

•A police officer solved the mystery of a reported break and entry to a Seventh Avenue North residence when he witnessed the source of loud bangs in the basement. A mouse was seen jumping down onto a furnace duct.

•Neighbours on Erickson Road were advised to take their dispute to a civil court. They were also advised about the misuse of police services.

•The owner of a green Chevrolet Silverado reported to be passing unsafely on 20th Avenue South promised police to take care of the problem. His nephew was driving the vehicle at the time.

•A motorcyclist escaped injury when he lost control of his bike on a curve on Riondel Road.

•Police were called to a 12th Avenue North residence, where an intoxicated male fell backwards while lifting a flat screen television over his head. He was checked out at the hospital, then held in police cells until sober.

September 23

•An ATV was reported stolen from a 25th Avenue South residence.

•A female motorcyclist was taken to hospital with injuries after she failed to negotiate a curve on Highway 3A near Sanca.

•A 28th Street male reported his tires were slashed and the vehicle was keyed. A threatening note was left at the scene. Police have no suspects in the incident.

•A complaint about theft of mail on 15th Avenue South was referred to Canada Post.

•It turned out to be a wild goose chase on Kootenay Lake when search and rescue volunteers were called out to rescue a boat stranded on a sandbar near the Kootenay River entrance. The boat was gone when rescuers arrived.

•A complaint about a mother bear and cub attempting to get onto a porch at a West Creston Road residence was referred to conservation officers.

•When police investigated a report of shots being fired near 20th Street, they found a vehicle with a revolver and rifle. When the driver was located, he reported that he had just shot a moose. He had a licence, but moose hunting season hasn’t started so he was charged with hunting out of season and improper storage of weapons.
