PORT McNEILL—North Vancouver Island MLA Claire Travena does not currently have a constituency office here, but that won’t stop a group of activists from sending her a message Wednesday.
Defend Our Coast, an organization dedicated to stopping the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline from Alberta to the B.C. Coast, and the tanker traffic that would result, is planning protests at MLA offices throughout coastal British Columbia on Wednesday.
In lieu of an office site, the local group plans to gather at the Port McNeill waterfront, near the Visitor Information Centre, beginning at noon.
The public is invited to attend, bring banners and pose for photos that will be sent on to the government to illustrate the resolve of B.C. residents against the proposed pipeline.
The protest action follows a larger gathering Monday at the legislature in Victoria that drew approximately 2,000 activists, Coastal First Nations representatives and union members and leaders.
Organizer Gwen Alsop said Wednesday’s event in Port McNeill will be a peaceful, family friendly gathering.
Alsop said participants, or those who are unable to attend, may also assist by sharing the event with friends or writing to their MLA.
