Driver attempts to avoid police road check

Avoiding a road check was just the beginning of problems for an Alberta driver on New Year’s Eve.

Avoiding a road check was just the beginning of problems for an Alberta driver on New Year’s Eve.

At about 8 p.m. officers were conducting a road check at 32nd Street and 48th Avenue when a Dodge car took off, avoiding the road check.

“The vehicle was stopped in the 3300 block of 37th Street,” said RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk. “When the officer started to investigate why the vehicle didn’t stop, he learned the plate belonged to a different vehicle.”

The driver also had an odor of liquor on his breath, so the 57-year-old from Calgary was detained for impaired driving.

As the officers continued with their investigation, they discovered the suspect had three outstanding warrants and was in breach of his conditions four times.

A .22 revolver was also seized from the vehicle along with a small amount of marijuana.

He appeared before a justice of the peace and was released from custody to appear in court at a later date.

That was part of a busy New Year’s Eve for local officers.

Two drivers were issued 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibitions for failing the roadside test.

One was issued a 90-day IRP for refusing the roadside test, and two drivers were given 12-hour driving prohibitions.

Nine motorists were ticketed for speeding, four were given violations for driving contrary to conditions, five tickets were written because there was no valid insurance for the vehicle, and two drivers were ticketed for having no valid driver’s licence.

A further 16 warnings were issued to motorists whose vehicles were in need of some kind of repair.
