Around 1 p.m., traffic services were patrolling the highway near Quick when the police cruiser was passed by a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt. The Cobalt was first observed going 125 km/h in a 100 km/h zone, and increased its speed, passing two vehicles before peaking at 170 km/h. The vehicle was stopped by RCMP and a 20-year-old man from Prince George was issued a violation ticket for excessive speeding and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.
June 30
At 3:30 p.m., a road check at the intersection of Babine Lake Road and Telkwa High Road lead police to opening a drug-related investigation. A white 2008 Chevrolet van was stopped and officers noticed a strong odour of marijuana. The occupants of the vehicle were arrested and a search of the vehicle revealed 13.9 grams of marijuana and a prescription bottle of Tylenol 3 tablets was also discovered with the name scratched off. The male who possessed the Tylenol reportedly told police that it was purchased off the street. All items were seized and the investigation into the matter is continuing.
July 1
There a number of traffic investigations on Canada Day. Around 9 a.m., a local 38-year-old man was stopped for speeding on the highway near Telkwa and had been found to have been drinking. His licence was seized and he received a 90 day driving prohibition. In addition his vehicle was impounded for 30 days and he was ordered to pay a $500 fine, and he received a speeding ticket in addition to all that.
At approximately 11 p.m., a vehicle going west on the highway was seen to not have any head or tail lamps on. When the driver was pulled over near the intersection of Highway 16 and Alberta Street, police smelled a strong odour of marijuana. The 25-year-old local man was arrested and a search revealed possession of the drug, and a pipe. The officer at the scene, a trained Drug Recognition Expert, noticed that the driver showed heavy physical symptoms of marijuana consumption and it was determined the ability to operate the vehicle was affected and he was issued a 24-hour driver’s licence suspension and the vehicle was impounded.
Eleven o’clock in the evening was a busy time as another driver was spotted rolling through a stop sign on King Street, approaching Third Avenue. The vehicle ran another stop sign when police vehicle lights were activated. The driver pulled over and tried to get out of his vehicle when the officer approached. The result of the pull-over was an arrest for the 40-year-old man for obstructing a police officer by evading a traffic stop. Further investigation revealed the driver had been drinking and received an immediate roadside prohibition, and was ticketed for disobeying a stop sign.
Also at 11 p.m., another driver, this time in the area of Queen Street and Second Avenue, was found to have been smoking marijuana and was found to have his driving abilities affected as a result. The 58-year-old male received 24-hour driving suspension.
July 3
RCMP, responding to an abandoned 911 call on Laidlaw Road, did a search of the home with the cooperation of the homeowners to ensure there were no safety concerns. In the course of that search, they discovered a small, seven plant marijuana grow operation in the home. All plants and equipment were seized for destruction, however no charges are being pursued, RCMP said.
July 6
RCMP responded to a complaint that someone had run into a person’s garage on Riverside Street in Telkwa. Police attended and noted a damaged garage, extending from the tin roof to the bottom of the trim. Police are looking for a large suspect vehicle.
