The majestic legacy of a Polson Park icon is being remembered.

City of Vernon Mayor Rob Sawatzky will perform a ceremony Saturday, June 23 at 11 a.m. in Polson Park near the windmill by the pond that Duchess swam in.

The ceremony is to dedicate a plaque, donated by the citizens who loved Duchess, to the memory of the swan.

Duchess, the swan who graced Vernon’s Polson Park for more than 25 years, was injured Feb. 20, nursed back to health by City of Vernon staff, returned to the park Feb. 24 and passed away Feb. 28.

When her mate was killed approximately 15 years ago, Duchess formed a bond with Ron Gibson, a City of Vernon Building Maintenance employee.

Duchess and Gibson made news headlines last February and city staff set up a page for her http://www.vernon.ca/swan/index.html
