Election numbers: Mayes’ support grows

Since he made his first run in the 2006 federal race, Okanagan-Shuswap MP Colin Mayes’ vote share has grown.

Monday night, Mayes took the riding with 31,443 votes, or 55.44 per cent of the votes; up from 2008’s 28,002 votes for a 51.7 per cent share and the 44.9 per cent he garnered with 24,448 votes in 2006, when he defeated NDP candidate Alice Brown by almost 10,000 votes.

Despite being a newcomer and missing the first two weeks of the election campaign, NDP’s NIkki Inouye managed to retain her party’s number-two spot in the riding, even pulling in some 400 more votes than in 2008.

The NDP Party has held the spot with 14,551 votes or 26.7 per cent in 2006 and in 2008 when they garnered only 19.7 per cent with 10,664 votes.

In this year’s election, the party picked up 14,961 votes for a vote share of 26.38 per cent.

While the Green Party lost more than 3,000 votes Monday with newcomer Greig Crockett – garnering only 6,063 votes compared to Huguette Allen’s 9,368 captured in 2008, he still manages to maintain third place in the Okanagan-Shuswap riding.

This move to third spot was accomplished in 2008 when Allen took 17.3 per cent of the vote share.

In counterpoint to the Conservatives, the Liberal Party’s fortunes have continued to slide since 2006.

Liberal candidate Janna Francis received the lowest number of votes in the riding Monday night – only 4,246, or a mere 7.49 per cent of the vote share.

This was a huge drop from the 12,330 votes and 22.6 per cent of voter share in 2006 and another small slide from the party’s fourth-place finish in 2008 when Francis captured 10 per cent of the vote share with 5,414 votes.13:12:33
