An emergency lighting system will be installed in one of Chilliwack’s designated emergency lodging sites with a $29,194 federal grant.
“This lighting system will provide an increased capacity to shelter people evacuated from their homes due to the effects of an emergency,” Jim MacDonald, Chilliwack’s Emergency Program Coordinator, said in a news release announcing the funding from the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program.
“Group lodging provides immediate relief and allows evacuees a chance to focus on their personal recovery plans,” MacDonald said.
The city’s emergency plan as identified three sites which could act as group lodging sites, and six locations have been designated for emergency reception centres.
Mayor Sharon Gaetz thanked the federal government for the funding which will “allow us to deliver emergency support directly to those in need.”
