Federal Liberals hosting Charter anniversary celebration April 17

Join the Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Mission Liberals at Heritage Park school

The Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Mission federal Liberal riding association is hosting a live event at Mission’s Heritage Park school April 17 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the passing of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The doors open at 3:30 p.m. and the event begins at 4 p.m., which features a live telecast on a big screen of the Hon. John McCallum, alongside Right Hon. Jean Chretien and federal Liberal leader Bob Rae.

Fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Charter include freedom of association, peaceful assembly, conscience and religion, and thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media.

McCallum, elected to the House of Commons in November 2000, currently serves as the Liberal Critic for treasury board, public works and government services, government operations and housing. He is vice-chair of the House of Commons government operations and estimates committee.

Monthly meetings

The riding association hosts monthly coffee meetings on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. at Bean Around Books, 22626 Lougheed Hwy., Maple Ridge.

This month’s meeting will be held at Grab-A-Java in Mission, 33093 Seventh Ave., following the Charter celebration event.
