A fire at an industrial feed mill in Abbotsford on Saturday night caused about $5,000 damage.
Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service was called to Ritchie Smith Feeds, located at 33777 Enterprise Ave., at about 7:15 p.m.
When crews arrived, they saw light smoke coming from a processing building, and they were directed to a grinding machine in the plant where there was a small fire.
All workers had safely evacuated the building.
In addition to putting out the fire at the grinding unit, crews put out small spot fires that had extended up into the silo, where the product being ground was stored.
Assistant Fire Chief Ron Hull said preliminary investigation has determined that the fire was caused by the product and the results of the grinding process.
“Staff on site were quick to react in getting the equipment shut down and called 911, preventing further spread,” he said.
Responding to the incident were 12 career firefighters on three firetrucks along with 24 auxiliary crew on six apparatus.
