Good Friday had a bad ending for one Cawston property owner as fire completely destroyed a home on Armstrong Drive.
The Keremeos and District Fire Department was called out to the blaze around 10 p.m.
Firefighters had difficulty finding the correct driveway into the home but Fire Chief Jordy Bosscha said the short delay didn’t impact the force’s chance at saving the home.
“There was no hope of us saving that home. The five minutes extra it took us wouldn’t have mattered.
It was fully engulfed long before we got there,” he said.
Bosscha said no one was in the house at the time of the fire and a cause has yet to be determined.
At this point the property owner has not been reached so it’s unclear if anyone was currently residing at the home.
Bosscha said he’s heard different stories that the house had been vacant for several months and stories that someone had moved in recently.
It took firefighters four hours to battle the fire. Keremeos had 15 fighters on site and five also attended from the Osoyoos detachment.
An excavator was brought in Saturday to knock down the remaining structure for safety reasons.
“Everyone worked well together. There was good cooperation between the RCMP, the firefighters and Dutchies Transfer where the excavator came from,” he said.
