Influenza infection rates have been “low” to date in the Interior Health region, but activity is starting to increase, as is normal for this season.

An Interior Health spokesperson says the H3N2 strain is prevalent this year, as expected. This year’s flu vaccine protects against the strain.

An increase in infections is expected in the coming weeks and months. They are brought on by seasonal holiday gatherings and travel, amongst other factors.

Vaccinations are still available. They are administered at a wide variety of locations including public health clinics, physician’s offices and pharmacies. It is available for free for those at risk, including young children, persons 65 and older, and those with compromised immune systems.

Wash your hands, sneeze into the crook of your elbow or stay home when sick to prevent the spread of flu.
