Former Nelson teen found dead at Ross Spur

Trail RCMP say a 17-year-old girl formerly from Nelson has died suddenly, although they’re still investigating the cause.

Trail RCMP say a 17-year-old girl formerly from Nelson has died suddenly, although they’re still investigating the cause.

Just after 1 a.m. Sunday, they responded to a 911 call from a home on Faulkner Road in Ross Spur, where they found the girl had life-threatening injuries.

She was taken by ambulance to hospital in Trail where she was pronounced dead. Sgt. Mike Wicentowich told the Star she was originally from Nelson, but was living in the home at Ross Spur.

A 28-year-old man, who made the emergency call, was arrested on an unrelated matter and will appear in Castlegar Provincial Court tomorrow morning.

Wicentowich said a warrant was out for the man’s arrest after he failed to appear in court on a charge of obstructing a police officer.

He added the arrest appeared to be causing rumours to swirl on social media and police issued a statement to stem speculation.

“We are investigating the cause and take it seriously to ensure there was no foul play,” he said. “For now it is a ‘sudden death.’”

The Kootenay Boundary regional detachment general investigative section and crime reduction continue to investigate along with the Nelson forensic investigation section.

No names have been released.
