Provincial assistance will ensure shelter for Vernon residents without a place to call home.
B.C. Housing will provide funding for 10 extreme weather shelter spaces with the John Howard Society, which operates Gateway House.
“We can’t predict when extreme weather will affect Vernon, but we can be prepared,” said Eric Foster, Vernon-Monashee MLA.
“These extreme weather spaces in Vernon will save lives and provide a safe place for shelter.”
Extreme weather shelters supplement the more than 1,800 permanent, year-round shelter beds available in B.C.
“Each winter, the B.C. government works with communities and volunteers around the province to make sure that extra shelter space is available during the cold winter months,” said Rich Coleman, minister responsible for housing.
“These additional spaces supplement permanent, year-round services and provide an extra layer of support to make sure that everyone has a warm, safe place to stay.”
