Is your family ready?
Emergency Preparedness Week is May 1-7 when the city sets out to educate people on how to protect themselves and their families should a major disaster strike.
Karen Lindsay, emergency program coordinator, said the city is building on the awareness generated by the earthquake in Japan in March.
“With all the things going on in Japan we’re going to focus more on education and that will be through advertising [in print media] as well as online to encourage people to make an earthquake kit,” Lindsay said.
City staff will be at popular shopping locations offering educational materials showing how to respond to an earthquake and how to assemble emergency preparedness kits.
“It’s going to be relatively low key only because we had such a surge when that earthquake struck in Japan,” Lindsay said. “Japan made it real.”
The city hosted a forum on the Japan earthquake in March which showcased the first-hand experiences and video footage Marley Daviduk and Carisa Webster, who near ground zero when the quake struck.
Lindsay strongly encourages people to view the forum online at www.nanaimo.ca/EN/main/departments/Fire-Rescue/EmergencyManagement.html.
