Smoke will cover much of the area in and around Castlegar for the next couple of days, says a report from the Southeast Fire Centre.
The smoke is being blown northeastwards from fires burning in Washington, Idaho, California and Oregon.
“None of these fires are close to the Canada/US border,” said Karlie Shaughnessey, fire information officer. “There are currently no fires burning near any communities or structures.”
The closest fire is located north of Skookumchuk near Cranbrook and is 1.3 hectares wide.
“So far this season, the Southeast Fire Centre has seen 157 fires which have burned 997 hectares,” said Shaugnessey. “Of those fires, 40 are person-caused and the rest are lightning-caused.”
Last year at this time, there were 97 fires to date and 39 hectares burned.
