• Ladysmith Family and Friends (LaFF) staff members are taking on the Great Lake Walk on Sept. 21 to raise money for LaFF.

One hundred per cent of the pledges collected will go to LaFF’s regular programming and for purchasing a much-needed portable hand washing station for LaFF.

There are many ways to donate, and tax receipts will issued for pledges over $25.

To help LaFF, you can make a pledge at Aggie Hall during LaFF program hours. You can also go to www.Canadahelps.org to make an online donation. Enter Ladysmith Family and Friends Society and note Great Lake Walk in the comments area. Another way to contribute is to mail a cheque to LaFF, Box 1830, Ladysmith, B.C., V9G 1B4 and reference Great Lake Walk.

• Have you dreamed about taking courses or a full program at Vancouver Island University (VIU)?

VIU’s Advising Centre has introduced a new service geared toward helping prospective students explore educational options and design a plan to get started.

At “Explore Your VIU” sessions held every Tuesday at the Nanaimo campus, potential students will get a chance to explore programs VIU has to offer and what might be a good fit. The weekly sessions from 10-11 a.m. in Building 250-Room 308 will give participants an opportunity to make connections with each other and University Educational Counsellors.

Explore Your VIU sessions will appeal to anyone contemplating a career change, mature students, those hoping to re-enter the workforce, or stay-at-home-parents thinking about returning to school.

Those unable to attend Tuesday sessions may see an Educational Counsellor for a brief drop-in appointment on Wednesdays from 12:30-2 p.m. at the Advising Centre, located on the top floor of Building 200.

Educational Counsellors are also available during the summer by phone at 1-888-920-2221 ext. 6410 or 250-740-7410 or by e-mail at advising@viu.ca for anyone unable to get to the Nanaimo campus.

• You can take care of any document shredding you need and support Crime Stoppers Saturday, Aug. 10 when the Nanaimo and District Crime Stoppers program and Save On Foods host their second confidential shredding day.

From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., anyone can drop off their documents in the parking lot of the Save On Foods at Terminal Park Mall in Nanaimo, and for a $10 donation, they will be confidentially shredded. Once again, this service is being provided compliments of Island Document Storage and Shredding (IDSS).

A barbecue will be up and running with hot dogs and burgers grilled and served by volunteers with the local Crime Stoppers program.
