High-end racing bikes didn’t help low-speed getaway after Saanich robbery

Police arrested two men last night for stealing $40,000 high-end racing bicycles from a Victoria-based triathlon company

Police arrested two men last night for stealing high-end racing bicycles from the Saanich home that acts as the headquarters for the Subaru Western Triathlon Series.

A resident living in the lower suite of the house called Saanich police at 3:30 a.m. this morning after seeing two men running from the home, with one carrying a bicycle, in the 700 block of Sayward Road.

Officers and a dog unit descended on the area and eventually located a 32-year-old man and a 50-year-old man, both residents of Saanich. After running a short distance, the suspects were found hiding in tall grass in separate locations near the Pat Bay Highway, police say.

Police also found $40,000 worth of racing bikes, bike frames and gear stashed in bushes near the property, and which was returned to the owner.

A Western Triathlon Series employee confirmed their house was robbed, but a spokesperson wasn’t immediately available to comment.

The two suspects have been released and have a court date in June to face charges of breaking and entering and theft.
