A high streamflow advisory for the Fraser River has been issued by the BC River Forecast Centre following heavy rains Saturday that pushed water levels at the Mission gauge to 5.7 metres Sunday morning.
The centre is predicting the river to climb to 6.2 metres later Sunday or Monday.
“The Fraser River at Hope is currently flowing at 10,200 cubic metres per second,” the centre said Sunday morning, “and is expected to reach up to 10,800 m3/s through Sunday and into Monday.”
Water levels in the Fraser are expected to climb throughout the week.
“While there may be a slight drop in flow rates at Hope in the early part of the week, levels are expected to rise mid‐week and reach peak levels on late‐Thursday or Friday. Flows are forecast to reach 11,500‐13,000 m3/s at Hope.”
River levels above six meters at the Mission gauge mean the Fraser is beyond “bank full conditions” and limited flooding in areas not protected by Chilliwack’s diking system is beginning to occur.
The city’s flood response plan calls for the regular dike patrols to begin and the opening of its emergency operation centre to co-ordinate flood fighting activities.
