Wells Gray Wilderness Society gives
UNESCO update
Tom Dickinson and Catherine Hickson from the Wells Gray Wilderness Society (WGWS) gave a presentation and update to the Board. The group is striving to include Wells Gray Provincial Park on Canada’s Tentative List for UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The Tentative List is the first step to securing UNESCO World Heritage Site status for the Park. The Board agreed to write a letter of support for the WGWS.
Public Assent Process Approved for
Geopark Designation
The Board approved a public assent process to determine if there is sufficient public support for establishment of a Geopark designation for the North Thompson corridor. It would run from the southern boundary of Barriere to the northern boundary of Electoral Area “B” including all of Electoral Areas “A”, “B” and “O” and the districts of Barriere and Clearwater.
A Global Geopark designation is anticipated to raise the international profile of the area’s unique landforms and geological significance. This is expected, in turn, to strengthen the existing tourism industry and overall economic viability of individual communities within the North Thompson.
Board Approves Beer Garden for Blue River
Community Park Event
The Blue River Community Association was given approval by the Board to host a beer garden as part of the group’s Community Welcome to Summer BBQ, which takes place on June 10, at the Blue River Community Park at Eleanor Lake. Because the park is owned by the TNRD, the approval comes with the following requirements:
• The Association must meet or exceed all requirements of the TNRD’s Special Event Permit.
• The Association must complete the Thompson Headwaters Park Use Application.
• The Association must meet the Commercial General Liability requirements of $3,000,000, with the TNRD being identified as an additional insured.
• The consumption of alcoholic beverages must be restricted to a specified area of the park, with a clearly marked perimeter and one controlled access point.
• No glass containers are permitted to be served.
• All garbage generated must be removed from the park by the Association.
Gas Tax Funds to Help Fund New
Bike Trail Networks
The Board approved the expenditure to a maximum of $24,000, allocated to Electoral Area “A” (Wells Gray Country), in Federal Gas Tax – Community Works Fund revenues, to fund the development of a new section of the Candle Creek Mountain Bike Trails Network, secured under Recreation Sites and Trails BC Partnership Agreement.
Savona Water System Gets Gas Tax
for Pump Upgrades
The Board approved the expenditure to a maximum of $100,000, allocated to Electoral Area “J” (Copper Desert Country), in Federal Gas Tax – Community Works Fund revenues, to fund pump upgrades for the Savona Community Water System.
