Highway 97 resurfacing project underway

An asphalt resurfacing project to resurface 11 kilometres of Highway 97 from Penticton to the Summerland area.

An asphalt resurfacing project has been awarded to Peter’s Bros. Construction Ltd. of Penticton in the amount of $1.9 million to resurface 11 kilometres of Highway 97 in the Summerland area.

“Crews will be resurfacing 11 kilometres of Highway 97 from Duncan Avenue in Penticton to the Trout Creek Bridge in Summerland,” said Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Todd Stone. “Over one million tonnes of asphalt will be used this year to resurface provincial highways and side roads.”

This resurfacing project will begin after Labour Day to avoid the busy summer traffic. Completion is scheduled for mid-November.

“Highway 97 is an essential piece of local infrastructure to our communities and our regional economy,” said Penticton MLA Dan Ashton. “I’m pleased to see it will benefit from improvement projects that will keep people and goods on the move, while ensuring a safer driving experience for all users. During construction, I encourage travellers to have patience through the construction zone for the safety of the workers and fellow drivers.”

This project is part of B.C. on the Move, the provincial government’s 10-year plan for the improvement of the province’s transportation network. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure will invest almost $2.7 billion over the next three years to improve British Columbia’s transportation network.

As part of this plan, the provincial government will invest $380 million over three years to resurface provincial highways. Highway resurfacing includes conventional paving, hot-in-place recycle paving (an environmentally-friendly, made-in-B.C. technology) and sealcoating for lower-volume rural highways. This investment program is the main component of the government’s strategy to resurface 1,000 kilometres of provincial highway annually.
