There are scores of individuals and teams taking part in the annual Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life at Vernon’s Polson Park.
Three generations of Kazmars – mom Annette Kazmar, daughter Karen Baker and Baker’s daughter Alana – are taking part in memory of Kazmar’s husband, George, who lived in Vernon his entire life.
The event, which started Saturday at 6 p.m. and wraps up Sunday at 6 a.m., began with a poignant victory lap carried out by cancer survivors.
The survivors entered through an honour guard conducted by the Buoyant Buddies dragonboat team, complete with raised paddles for the survivors to walk through.
Another beautiful moment occurs at dusk when the oval at Polson Park will be illuminated with candles in memory of loved ones lost to cancer.
People take part in teams or as individuals and walk for the entire event or do as many laps as they want.
There is entertainment and activities for all ages, including carnival booths, volleyball tournament, tug-of-war competition and live music all night long.
Funds raised support cancer research, support services, prevention and advocacy efforts.
