Hundreds to mark 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge

Community invited to Cloverdale ceremony on Sunday, April 9, to mark Vimy’s centennial.

On April 9, 1917, the four Canadian army divisions fought as a unified force for the first time, accomplishing what was thought impossible by the British and French forces – they captured the heavily fortified Vimy Ridge, 175 km north of Paris, France.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge, and the community is invited to a ceremony marking the centennial on Sunday, April 9, at the Cloverdale Cenotaph.

More than 500 cadets, RCMP officers and Royal Canadian Legion members are expected to attend in remembrance of Canadian soldiers who gave their lives at Vimy Ridge.

The victory came at a brutal cost. More than 100,000 fought in the battle, and 3,598 were killed and another 7,104 injured. Thousands more went missing and were presumed dead.

The service will start at 9:45 a.m., but spectators are recommended to come early to secure a spot in the plaza, at 17710 56A Avenue.

Afterwards, the community is welcome to follow the cadets to the Cloverdale Legion at 17567 57 Ave to view an anniversary display.
