Ice storm results in power outages

Several areas of Abbotsford, Mission, Aldergrove and Chilliwack were impacted.

Power outages have affected areas of Abbotsford, Mission, Aldergrove and Chilliwack.

Most of the outages occurred overnight due to an ice storm that hit the Fraser Valley following a day of snow followed by freezing rain.

The storm brought trees down across power lines.

Although several of the outages have been restored, several areas remain without power.

In Abbotsford, Aberdeen Elementary on Bradner Road has been closed until noon.

“However, the decision as to whether to send children to school today is up to the parents/guardians, as we recognize alternate arrangements may already have been made,” the school district website states.

In Aldergrove, Betty Gilbert Middle School, Shortreed Elementary and Aldergrove Community Secondary were closed briefly but have since been re-opened.

Schools in Mission are open, except for Hatzic Elementary and Hatzic Secondary, while all schools are closed in Chilliwack, which experienced a large accumulation of snow yesterday.

A couple of large power outages affected about 3,500 homes in Abbotsford, Langley and Mission from about 8 p.m. Sunday to 3:30 a.m. Monday.

About 500 homes in Abbotsford and Mission were still without power, as of 9:30 a.m. Monday. Power is expected to be restored by noon.
