Joines’ takes bronze in Sochi

Rossland’s Kimberley Joines’ bid for a silver medal ended in bronze as the German paralympian’s disqualification was overturned by a jury at the Sochi Paralympic Winter Games.

Joines wins the bronze medal for the women’s sit-ski slalom at the Sochi Paralympics, while German skier Anna Schaffelhuber has now has won gold.

Schaffelhuber has been disqualified after the first run of the race for not having her outriggers (the skis that para-skiers use for poles) in a stationary and fixed position at the start of the race.

She was allowed to make her second run while a decision on her appeal was being made. The jury said Thursday “Schaffelhuber had not gained a competitive advantage from her start and therefore should not have been disqualified.”

That mean the German’s combined time was enough to win gold, while her teammate Anna-Lena Forster took silver.

Schaffelhuber’s now has three medals at the 2014 Paralympic Games, winning gold in the sitting downhill and super-G.

Joines finished her two runs in a combined time of two minutes, 15.16 seconds.
