There are concerns about what pipeline expansions in B.C. could mean for the environment.
About 70 people protested against Kinder Morgan’s pipeline plans Monday at the Vernon Recreation Complex.
Jody Leon, the keynote speaker, touched on the protests at Standing Rock,North Dakota, and how demonstrators are being water cannoned in sub-zero temperatures.
Organizers of the Vernon event say that federal approval of Kinder Morgan’s pipeline will make it difficult for Canada to meet its greenhouse gas commitments made a year ago at the Paris climate conference.
“The KM pipeline and the resulting oil tankers carrying diluted bitumen will also threaten the west coast with oil spills,” states a release.
“The billions of dollars needed for the KM pipeline, opposed by Vancouver and Burnaby, will divert energy investment needed now to build our alternate energy infrastructure.”
