Brent Wold’s backhand shot from the slot eluded goalie Guillaume Therien at 8:37 of the first overtime period to give the Dauphin Kings a 4-3 win over the Carleton Place Canadians at the RBC Cup Canadian Junior A hockey championship Sunday night at Kal Tire Place.
The win moves the Kings, the West 2 representatives, to the top of the round-robin at 2-0 while the East Region champion Canadians fall to 1-1.
Wold’s winner came after both teams squandered power-play opportunities in the extra period.
Dauphin, however, took advantage of the man advantage during regulation time, scoring three power-play markers.
Jesse Bernard opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period.
After goals by Vinny Post in the second, and a shorthanded marker from Stephen Baylis in the third gave the Canadians a 2-1 lead, the Kings went back to work after Carleton Place’s Larry Smith was assessed a double minor for high sticking.
Goals from Bernard and Dylan butler 2:35 apart on the Smith penalty gave Dauphin the lead back.
The Canadians, however, forced overtime on a goal from Stephen Cooney at 12:05.
Therien finished the night with 30 saves while his counterpart, Michael Stiliadis, made 31 saves for Dauphin.
There is only game scheduled for Monday: the host Vernon Vipers take on the Yorkton Terriers at 7 p.m. Both teams are 0-1.
