Kinnikinnik kids moving to Airport school

Child care centre was damaged by floods so must relocate

Kinnikinnik Child Care Centre will offer its before and after school programs out of Airport Elementary School starting in September.

Kinnikinnik currently operates its programs out of 19 Wing, but during last week’s Comox Valley Board of Education meeting, school district director of operations Ian Heselgrave noted Kinnikinnik had to move.

“They had a flood in the building they were in and some subsequent mould issues, so had to vacate the space,” Heselgrave told the Board of Education. “They’re temporarily in the Military Family Resource Centre that’s inside the 19 Wing Recreation Centre; the space isn’t suitable for them.”

He added 19 Wing’s maintenance department doesn’t expect to be able to repair the space in time for the next school year, and Kinnikinnik primarily serves Airport Elementary students.

“So, they’re looking for a classroom to operate the before and after school day care, and lots of classrooms available at Airport,” he said. “They’re a good standing operator and they walk kids back and forth to school all the time so it’s a good fit for us.”

Trustees approved the request.
