This Saturday (April 26), the Ladysmith and District Historical Society will celebrate the launch of a new book exploring the history of a popular spot known as The Gap.
Discover The Gap Through The Memories of Those Who Lived Them at Porlier Pass, which was compiled by the historical society, will be officially launched Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at Salamander Books.
The book features stories and photographs from Chemainus and Ladysmith families who camped at Coon Bay on Galiano Island.
“Long before Dionisio Point Provincial Marine Park on the north end of Galiano Island was officially opened, it had been a regular summer haven for hundreds of people from Ladysmith, Chemainus and beyond,” states the book’s foreword. “Since the early 1900s, the popular destination, with its sandy beaches and famous fishing grounds, had long been regarded as a magical place for children and adults alike. The pages of this book [are] a trip down memory lane, through the eyes of the generations of campers, affectionately referred to as ‘Gap Rats.’ The summer colony at Coon Bay was made up of people from all walks of life, all ethnic backgrounds, and all ages. This eclectic group of people have opened their hearts, as they passionately share the stories and photographs of a very special time in the history of their families.
Whether you were a regular at The Gap, an occasional visitor, or had never set foot on the shore, you will find a common thread woven throughout all the remembrances. There was a kindred spirit that silently existed in the summer settlement. You weren’t just a camper; you were a member of a caring community.”
