Local residents pursue top athlete honours

Ina Forrest and Josh Dueck nominated for Sport B.C.’s Athlete of the Year Awards.

Two North Okanagan residents have been named as finalists in Sport B.C.’s Athlete of the Year Awards.

Curler Ina Forrest, of Spallumcheen, and skier Josh Dueck, of Vernon, are finalists in the athlete with a disability category, along with equestrian athlete Lauren Barwick, of Aldergrove.

“The Athlete of the Year Awards provides a great opportunity to recognize these talented and deserving athletes, coaches and officials,” said Sport B.C. president Rob Newman

“This year’s nominees in all of the award categories are certainly a testament to the strength and depth of sport in our province.”

A member of the Vernon Curling Club, Forrest played third on Team Canada’s wheelchair curling team that won gold at the 2014 Paralympic Games in Russia. She was also part of the gold-medal Paralympic curling team at the  2010 Vancouver Games.

At the 2014 Paralynpic Winter Games, Dueck won gold in the super combined and silver in the downhill. Also in the 2013-14 season, he collected victories in the super combined and Super G at a World Cup in Italy and was runner-up in the Super G at the Panorama World Cup stop.

The 49th annual Athlete of the Year Awards ceremony takes place March 12 in Vancouver.
