Lumby arena upgrade rings up $16,000 Telus grant

Fundraising efforts to help fix the girl's change room gets significant boost from phone giant

Local efforts to raise money for upgrading the girl’s change rooms at Lumby’s Pat Duke Memorial Arena are getting a boost from Telus.

The phone giant will donate $16,000 through its Telus Community Investment grant program.

“We are so excited,” said Angie Clowry, local organizing committee team leader.

“The entire North Okanagan community was so supportive of Lumby’s bid for the honour of being named Kraft Hockeyville 2016, and they have continued to support us in our fundraising.

“I think that this grant really demonstrates Telus’ commitment to being a part of their community.”

Steve Jenkins, general manager, Okanagan, and vice-chair of Telus’ Thompson Okanagan Community Board, concurs.

“Our board is proud to support the improvements at the Pat Duke Memorial Arena, which demonstrates our passion to give where we live,” he said.

Since 2011, the Telus Thompson Okanagan Community Board has contributed $1.6 million to 205 grassroots projects.

Earlier this year, Lumby was awarded the title of Kraft Hockeyville 2016, and received $100,000 for upgrades to the Pat Duke Memorial Arena, and the opportunity to host the Oct. 2 NHL pre-season hockey game between the Edmonton Oilers and the Los Angeles Kings.

To date, local fundraising efforts for the arena upgrades have raised an additional $19,000, which has now been increased to $35,000 as a result of the Telus Community Investment grant.
