A house fire in Lumby is believed to have been caused from a marijuana grow-operation.
Lumby RCMP and the Lumby and District Fire department were called to a residence on Grandview Avenue in Lumby Sunday for a house on fire.
“The fire was extinguished and a small marijuana grow-op was located in the basement of the residence,” said RCMP Cst. Jocelyn Noseworthy.
“The fire is not believed to be suspicious in nature and the point of origin appears to have been from within the marijuana grow-op.”
Police do not anticipate charges arising from this incident and there were no injuries to the tenants of the residence.

A house fire in Lumby late Sunday morning is being investigated by RCMP.
Nine Lumby firefighters, with aid from Lavington crews, were called to the Grandview Avenue blaze at 11:30 am.
“When I arrived, there was lots of smoke coming out of the basement and windows,” said Lumby fire chief Tony Clayton.
Two residents were taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.
“They were trying to combat it with hoses,” said Clayton.
Due to the nature of the call, fire crews had to wait until BC Hydro crews arrived before they could battle the blaze.
RCMP are investigating the fire.
Damage is estimated to be around $75,000, but the majority of damage is to the basement where the fire originated. The rest of the home sustained smoke and water damage.
“There’s very little outside damage,” said Clayton.
Occupants of the home, which includes three young children, have been displaced.
