Vernon’s Meals on Wheels is looking for assistance.
The program, which is operated by the Schubert Centre, delivers meals to seniors, convalescents and the disabled in their homes.
“What I need desperately are volunteers for Fridays,” said Deanna Toporchak, Meals on Wheels co-ordinator.
“I am short anywhere from two to eight volunteers on the Fridays in July so this is quite a serious situation. I would hate to think that we would have to cancel deliveries on Fridays.”
Toporchak says she had enough volunteers but summer holidays and illness have impacted the schedule.
“Currently we have 52 clients in need of meal delivery every Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” she said.
“The numbers are constantly changing due to those being released from hospital and needing meals, then recovering and no longer needing meals and some of our clients have been admitted into long-term care facilities,” she said.
“But that is what the program is all about, providing meals for those who presently cannot look after themselves.”

“We think the Schubert Centre is providing a valuable service to the community at a nominal cost to those in need, but we cannot do it without the volunteers,” said Toporchak.
