More than 100 people are expected to walk, run or roll in support of the MS Society’s largest fundraiser in the central Island later this month.
On April 28, the Scotiabank MS Walk will be held at Maffeo Sutton Park to raise money and awareness for the fight against multiple sclerosis.
Race organizers say participants have been fundraising and collecting pledges for several months.
“Whether it’s for themselves, their mother, brother or friend, members of our community are coming together at the annual MS Walk to help find a cure to MS,” said Ashley Hodgins, manager of development for the south and central Vancouver Island chapter of the society.
Proceeds from the event support local programs for people affected by MS that can enhance their quality of life and deal with the issues related to the disease. Initiatives include information and referral, supportive counselling, self-help and support groups, financial assistance and recreation and social programs. Multiple sclerosis is a complex, unpredictable and often disabling disease of the central nervous system affecting between 55,000 and 75,000 people in Canada.
Participants can choose a three-, six- or nine-kilometre route, all of which are wheelchair or scooter accessible, and dogs on leashes are welcome. For more information or to register, please phone 250-754-6321 or visit www.mswalks.ca.
