A Nanaimo man is recovering in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital after being struck by a car Friday night.
According to police, a Pontiac Wave was headed northbound on the Trans-Canada Highway at around 6 p.m., near Petroglyph Park. The driver noticed a person crouched over in the middle of his lane, but was not able to move over as there was another vehicle in the adjacent lane.
The driver applied the brakes and struck the pedestrian, said Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong, Nanaimo RCMP spokeswoman, in a press release.
“The pedestrian landed on the windshield of the car and then slid to the ground once the vehicle came to a stop. The driver immediately called 911 and then got out to assist the pedestrian, now known to be a 66-year-old male from Nanaimo,” Armstrong said. “The male was transported to the hospital in Nanaimo, where he is being treated for two broken legs, as well as back injuries. He remains in hospital.”
Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors and the investigation is ongoing.
