Two Nanaimo families are grieving the loss of loved ones after a fatal crash on Highway 10 in Surrey Saturday.

Fifty-two-year-old Jovan Salapura and 21-year-old Jarrett Swackhamer died at the scene after a speeding Chevy Cavalier travelling the wrong way on Highway 10 slammed into their Nissan Pathfinder.

Swackhamer’s girlfriend was airlifted to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Cavalier also died in the crash, which happened shortly after 1:45 a.m. when police received a call that a man was driving erratically westbound on Highway 10, just west of King George Boulevard.

Police said the driver of the Cavalier was from the Lower Mainland, but have not yet identified him.

Police believe speed was a factor, but haven’t determined whether drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash.
