Nanaimo Mountie charged with assault

NANAIMO – RCMP officer to appear in court to face charge of assault causing bodily harm.

The Criminal Justice Branch of the Ministry of Justice announced today (Feb. 24) that charges have been approved against a Nanaimo RCMP officer from an incident investigated by the Independent Investigation Office.

A charge of assault causing bodily harm has been approved against Const. Tim Bedard, a member of the Nanaimo RCMP detachment, that stems from an incident alleged to have occurred in the detachment cells June 15, 2014.

According to a report from the Independent Investigation Office, Mounties arrested an adult male and transported him to  Nanaimo RCMP detachment cells. During the process of booking him into a cell, a physical altercation between the male and officers took place resulting in the prisoner being injured.

A single count of assault causing bodily harm was sworn against Bedard Wednesday.

Bedard’s first appearance in the case is scheduled for March 17 in Nanaimo provincial court and he is currently on administrative duties at Nanaimo detachment.
