Nanaimo police urge caution when walking on railway tracks

NANAIMO – Two unsolved sex assaults trigger public advisory from RCMP.

The Nanaimo RCMP urges the public to use caution in light of two recent unsolved sex assaults involving teenage girls.

The two incidents, which occurred on Friday and Dec. 3, happened on a stretch of the E&N Railway tracks between Fifth Street and the upper portion of Hecate Street.

The suspect is Caucasian in his 30s, 5-foot-10, with a reddish beard.

Police advise people to avoid walking in secluded areas at night, use the buddy system if walking in secluded areas, keep sound volume low if using ear buds or headphones, and keep a cellphone in hand to call for help quickly if needed.

If confronted, yell, scream and run and report suspicious activity immediately.
