Nanaimo school district could forgo a bus routing software purchase in favour of a consultant to evaluate its transportation services.
The school district transportation subcommittee examined route software options based on the recommendations of a 2012 study but after discovering the cost would be approximately $58,000, it said the district might not be best served with the purchase. It is recommending the hiring of a consultant at the cost of $9,800 instead.
The consultant would appraise the district’s bus routes in regards to courtesy riders, or students that don’t qualify to use the bus but are allowed to ride if there is space.
The recommendation will be forwarded to the school board for a vote at its Wednesday (Feb. 26) meeting.
