Nelson police warn of telephone scams

Police are reminding you to be wary of callers posing as a utility company rep, claiming your power will be cut off.

The Nelson Police Department is once again warning you to be aware of potential phone scams.

On Tuesday, a local business received a call from someone claiming to be employed by a local hydro company. The person stated the business’ power was going to be disconnected immediately unless the owner bought “smart pay” cards/vouchers and followed the instructions.

Police say it’s a scam. If you receive a similar call, don’t provide any personal information. In addition, check the validity of the request by hanging up and calling the company mentioned.

This is the third warning police have issued since November due to reports from the public. If you are still not sure if the call is valid, call police at 250-354-3919 or PhoneBusters at 1-888-495-8501.
