New bridge for 97A

A $2.7 million contract has been awarded to Neel-co Builders to construct the new three-lane bridge over Hummingbird Creek, north of Mara.

The Hummingbird Creek Bridge project will benefit motorists by enhancing the safety and reliability of the crossing during high creek flows, especially after significant rainfalls or during spring runoff.

The project will construct an 18-metre concrete box girder bridge which will enhance the dependability of Highway 97A as the major north-south arterial from Sicamous to Vernon.

“This project is in keeping with our government’s commitment to improving our infrastructure and keeping our highways safe,” said Shuswap MLA Greg Kyllo.

“Not only will this project construct a clear span bridge over Hummingbird Creek, but additional improvements to the streambed will reduce the potential for erosion and flooding at this creek crossing.”

The bridge project was announced in 2013. Work on this project began in June and is expected to be complete by the end of October.
